There are many ways to have an impact and make your voice heard on the issues that matter to you.
One of the most important things you can do is testify in favor of, or against, bills that may come before your state your legislature when they’re in committee.
I’ve done this several times this legislative session. Here are three examples:
- I submitted testimony in support of a bill that will improve zoning regulations, training for zoning and land use officers, and create a more equitable Connecticut.
- I submitted testimony in support of a bill that will provide more equitable funding for education.
- I submitted testimony in favor of a bill that increased gun safety, specifically concerning risk protection orders.
In some cases, I was able to testify before the committee. Communicating directly with legislators about the bills before them ensures that they know my thoughts whether I’m in their district or not. It allows me the opportunity to follow-up after the vote to let them know that I pay attention, to thank them for their time and effort.
Anyone can do this, it doesn’t require money, special expertise, or even a lot of time.
This is how we create the communities we want.
